Saint Pulcheria the Empress, sister of the emperor Theodosius II in the 5th century AD, piously and wisely advised her brother, then helped place on the throne the emperor Marcian, whom she married in name for the political benefit of the empire, yet they preserved their virginity, which they had consecrated to God. She defended the Orthodox at a time when Christians were threatened with heresy. She reposed in 453 AD.
