Saint John of Novgorod, a wonderworker, began in youth, with his brother Gabriel, to build a monastery, but ran out of funds. They prayed to the Mother of God, and bags of gold were brought to them upon a riderless white horse. John became a schemamonk, and later was chosen unanimously as archbishop of Novgorod, though he felt himself unworthy. When Novgorod was attacked by the prince of Suzdal, John rescued the city by his prayers, and through the power of a wonder-working icon.
