David, chief of a band of robbers, repented and resolved to be a monk. He compelled the abbot to accept him as a monk by threatening to reassemble his band of robbers, plunder the monastery, and kill the monks. After a spell of asceticism, the angel Gabriel told David that his sins had been forgiven, and he would be given the power to work miracles. David did not believe that his sins were forgiven so soon. As a punishment for not believing Gabriel, though David did become a miracle worker, his tongue was bound except when he was praying.
