The holy martyr Michael was prince of Chernigov at the time of the Tatar conquest of Kievan Rus' in the 13th century AD. He was driven from his realms, but then allowed to return as a subject of Batu Khan, the Tatar ruler. But when the khan required the subject Russian princes to worship the idols of the Tatars, prince Michael, along with his boyar Theodore, refused. They went to the khan's court to offer political submission, but refused to betray their Christian faith, and were beheaded.
