Orthodox Funeral

The Orthodox funeral is of very ancient origin, its text dating back to the fifth century and beyond. The hymns are of tremendous comfort to the mourners, helping them to grieve while simultaneously using that same grief to spur them to fervent prayer for their departed loved one.

This recording is not a performance, but is intended for personal prayer and reflection, and as an aid for those who wish to learn to sing the funeral. It was made at St. Alexander Nevsky Church in Richmond, Maine, by the St. Alexander Nevsky Church Ensemble. The service primarily follows the practice of Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY, unabbreviated except for the kathisma.
